Summary

We tested the XGL effect of moving a window to a different desktop in SUSE Linux Enterprise 10. The major issues found can be summarized as follows.

  1. People worried that the window would be lost if dragged off screen.
  2. People wanted to look at all of the desktops from the same view.
  3. People were disoriented when the desktop unexpectedly rotated.

Tasks

We used one task to test the XGL effect of moving a window to a different desktop. It was:
  1. Please move the window with a bug to the desktop that has the other, open bug pictures.
    • Success Rate: 22%
    • Time spent on this task
      Average 3 minutes 21 seconds
      Longest 6 minutes 36 seconds
      Shortest 35 seconds
    • Issues encountered:
      1. Users thought that the window would be lost if dragged off screen.
      2. Users wanted to look at all of the desktops from the same view. They, also, wanted to be able to drag windows between desktops in the view where they could see all of the desktops.
      3. If users sellected a window open on a different desk top, the desktops would flip to the one where the open panel was.
    • Recommendations:
      1. Give users more ways to move windows between desktops.
      2. Bring open panels to the current desktop so that the user feels in control.
