Summary

We tested the action turning on an XGL effect in SUSE Linux Enterprise 10. The major issues found can be summarized as follows.

  1. People did not see the distinction between the two water effects in the XGL control panel.
  2. People wanted methods other than keyboard short cuts to use effects.
  3. People did not know what a "Super" key is.
  4. People did not know what function keys are.

Tasks

We used one task to test turning on a XGL effect. It was:
  1. Please use the XGL control panel to turn on the effect that makes it look like rain is falling onto your screen.
    • Success Rate: 33%
    • Time spent on this task
      Average 2 minutes 29 seconds
      Longest 5 minutes 48 seconds
      Shortest 1 minute 7 seconds
    • Issues encountered:
      1. Users did not see the distinction between the two water effects in the XGL control panel. They turned on the ripple effect instead of the rain effect.
      2. Users wanted methods other than keyboard short cuts to use effects.
      3. Users did not know what a "Super" key was.
      4. Users did not know what function keys were.
    • Recommendations:
      1. Change the XGL control panel so that all effects have labels and descriptions.
      2. When possible, add GUI controls to activate effects.
      3. Add an image of the "Super" key next the word super.
      4. Draw a box around function buttons vissually making F and following number appear as one key.
